Dr. Micah W. Swalley: My Journey to Chiropractic

I first encountered the world of chiropractic during my high school years, in a moment that would change my life forever. As my family was settling into our new home in Rockford, MI, my mother sustained a debilitating injury, herniating a lumbar disc. In agonizing pain and unable to get out of bed, we faced the unsettling decision of how to help her heal. Serendipitously, my father had been leasing a small space in Dr. Wade Lowery’s office, a Gonstead chiropractor. Dr. Lowery came to our aid that weekend, and within days, my mother was walking again. This experience ignited a spark in me—a realization of the profound impact chiropractic care can have.

Soon after, I became a patient myself, using chiropractic care to recover from a water polo injury. At that time, I still viewed chiropractic solely as a means of pain relief, unaware of its full potential in unlocking the body’s innate healing capabilities.

After high school, I attended Grand Valley State University, where I played water polo and celebrated a championship victory in 2005. I graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences in 2009, initially aspiring to attend medical school to become an anesthesiologist. However, my time volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids opened my eyes to the complexities and challenges of the healthcare system. I found myself questioning how I truly wanted to help others, leading me back to Dr. Lowery and a deeper exploration of chiropractic.

In February 2013, I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic, having completed over 1,000 additional hours in the Gonstead Chiropractic technique through the Troxell Internship Program. I was honored to graduate Cum Laude and serve as President of my class, where I learned the importance of leadership and communication. I also interned with Dr. Richard Burns, a renowned Gonstead chiropractor, and my experiences reinforced my passion for this path.

Upon graduating, I married my high school sweetheart, Laurel in our hometown of Rockford, MI. She is my absolute joy, and has been on this journey with me from the start. Shortly after, we moved to Charlotte, NC to establish my practice under the Gonstead Chiropractic Center umbrella. Starting from scratch as an independent contractor in Fort Mill, SC, I faced numerous challenges but also numerous opportunities to build relationships and grow my practice. Engaging with the community through BNI meetings, Toastmasters, spinal screenings, and educational events laid the groundwork for a thriving practice rooted in connection and care.

Now, after a decade of dedication and hard work, I am proud to welcome my patients to my own practice, Foundations Chiropractic. In addition to chiropractic work, Laurel and I are both passionate about fitness. In the fall of 2024, I completed my first Ironman 70.3 triathlon. This pursuit reflects my dedication to health and well-being, both personally and professionally. My journey has been shaped by the influences of mentors, personal experiences, and an unwavering commitment to helping others unleash their body’s healing potential. As I continue to grow and learn, I remain dedicated to providing compassionate care that transforms lives.

I was born and raised in Rock Hill SC and graduated from South Pointe High School. I then went to York Technical College originally wanting to work in the dental field. I later found that my passions would lie elsewhere. I found a job at a chiropractic office that my dad had been going to after he suffered from debilitating sciatic pain. I saw how much chiropractic care helped him and then also myself, and I was so grateful for that. I have been an advocate for chiropractic care from then on. I now have over 5 years of experience working in a chiropractic office. In my current role as Clinical Director, I strive to create a welcoming environment, ensuring smooth daily operations, and exceptional care for our patients.

In my free time I enjoy spending quality time with my fiancé Anthony and our sweet pup, Sadie. I also love spending free time with my family and friends.

I grew up in the small town of Center Valley, Pennsylvania where I enjoyed the close-knit community and the comfort of small-town life. That all changed when my family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, during my 10th grade year. While the transition was challenging, it allowed me to finish high school in a new city and opened doors to new opportunities.

After graduation, I pursued my passion for Family and Child Development at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, earning a minor in Business along the way. After completing my degree, I returned to Charlotte, eager to apply my knowledge and experience.

It was here that I discovered Foundations Chiropractic. Although I had a background as a medical assistant, I had little exposure to chiropractic care, and my only previous experience had been with my father’s less-than- positive journey. However, at Foundations Chiropractic, I witnessed firsthand how chiropractic care could transform lives, offering not just physical restorative care, but hope—one adjustment at a time.

The dedication of the team restored my faith in chiropractic care, and I knew this was where I was meant to be—a part of a team making a true difference.

Today, I’m excited to join Foundations Chiropractic as a Chiropractic Assistant. I’m eager to contribute to a team that provides restorative care, hope and compassionate community to all who walk through our doors.

I'm so honored to be a part of the Foundations team as a chiropractic assistant. I was born in Canton, OH and married my high school love. We moved to South Carolina almost 30 years ago and have two grown children, Austin and Allie, a new son-in-law Spencer, currently serving in the US Navy and two dogs.

My previous experience is in banking and mortgages. I was also blessed with the chance to be able to stay at home while my children were in school. I love meeting new people and doing what I can to make people smile, so I wanted to start working again. My husband started seeing Dr. Swalley after he came highly recommended from friends of ours.

I was so amazed to see his progress after just a short period of time. I met Dr. Swalley and Rebeccah at the Foundations grand opening and really felt their warmth and passion for what they do. I love being a part of something that helps so many people. My free time is spent knitting, crocheting, reading and spending as much time with my family as I can.

What Patients Say About Foundations Chiropractic
I've been seeing Dr. Swalley for two years now, and I couldn’t be more grateful for his care. I first saw him while I was pregnant with my son, and he has been a vital part of our lives ever since. He even adjusted my son as a newborn and continues to treat him now as a toddler. Dr. Swalley truly listens, takes his time, and has an incredibly kind approach. I couldn't recommend him more highly!

I drive from Spartanburg, SC. That is about a 1.5 hour drive. That alone should sum it up. However the staff is so nice and helpful and the office is super clean. I never have to wait, they are very quick getting me back into a room. He practices the Gonstead technique which is very precise and the adjustments hold longer in my opinion. Waiting room is comfortable and open with lots of windows and there is also complimentary drinks. I highly recommend Dr. Swalley.

I've seen Dr. Swalley for almost 10 years now. Very recently, I experienced a nerve issue that some people have been recommended surgery for. I got with him right away and we worked out a plan to correct it. I can't thank him enough for what he's done to get me back to being pain free. He's the best!

Dr. Swalley has helped me and my family with multiple issues throughout the years to help us live a more comfortable life without pain. I wish I had my before and after xrays to share to show how he has corrected my back and neck. I recommend giving Dr. Swalley a chance to help you have a more comfortable life.
